BMW 540i 1995 (E34). Oxford Green.
6spd. Excellent condition. 62K mi.VIN: WBAHE5327SGA64349
Update 3/24/2004: Inspection I service at BMW of Peabody.
This is the car that Car and Driver called "luxo-sport-sedan heaven on earth",
Performed some minor front end work (normal wear and tear).
Their opinion is that this 540i is in excellent condition.
there's also a great New York Times article about it!I am the 2nd owner of this 540i (and a long-time member of the Boston Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America). I now commute to work in downtown Boston (via bus & subway) and am no longer driving it regularly. The car was purchased at BMW of Peabody as a Certified Pre-Owned BMW with approx. 30K miles (it came off a 3 year lease and had a 100% clean CarFax report). The car has been meticulously maintained at BMW of Peabody and at Mighty Motors in Cambridge, MA (recently relocated) and is in excellent condition (no accidents, etc.). I can provide all of the service records since I've owned it. It has always been garaged. Smoking nor pets have ever been allowed in the car. The car has not been raced or used on the track (although it would have been nice to get to one of the Boston Chapter driving schools with it). This is the most reliable, enjoyable, and comfortable car I've owned. Note that it was driven regularly on the highway, so the paint is not absolutely perfect.
This is both a great performance sedan and a full-size luxury family car, which sold for close to $60K new. The 8-cylinder 4.0L engine provides power (282hp @ 5800 RPM) coupled with an extremely smooth ride, and makes a big difference compared to its 6-cylinder cousins (525i and 535i, and even the newer 528i). The 6 speed manual transmission (5 spd. w/overdrive) was adapted from the 850i coupe.
I am including a copy of the Robert Bentley BMW 5-series Service Manual, since it helps to understand the car, even if you never really try to service it yourself (which I didn't, mainly because the aforementioned service folks are much more efficient than I'll ever be).
